About the Geforce GTX 1070 TI Founders Edition

Now known as the Founders Edition, this card was called “Reference Card” in the last series. The unique feature Nvidia GEFORCE GTX 1070 Ti  is the design presented by NVidia itself and differs from most other cards from the so-called “Board Partners” (developers such as MSI, Zotac, etc) in the type of cooling. The Founders Edition uses the so-called blower fan technique, which has advantages but also certain disadvantages.

Our Assessment

The Founders Edition is not for everyone. Do you want the typical GTX to look in your case? Then strike! Do you want to tinker with your card and install your fan or water cooling (and lose any warranty claims)? Even then, it would help if you grabbed it.

But if you want a solid and well-cooled graphics card, then don’t do it. Because as lovely as some like the blower fan technology, it, unfortunately, cools so severely in comparison to other cards.

The fan sucks in the air here and blows it out again next to the video connections. This leads to a difference of at least 10 ° C under full load, if not more. In some demanding games, the Founders Edition will quickly reach the maximum temperature and then throttle, while other cards are still running at top speed, well cooled. So be aware of what you are buying here.

Pros

  • Tried and tested nVidia optics
  • Best choice if you want to lend a hand yourself
  • 3x display port connections

Cons

  • Poor cooling compared to other cards
  • High volume
  • Shorter service life under permanent full load

About the Zotac GTX 1070 TI Mini

As the name suggests, the ZOTAC GTX 1070 TI Mini is a slightly more compact 1070 TI. In contrast to other graphics cards with the suffix “Mini,” you still get a card with two fans. But not only that – the fans take up most of the space on the top so that the highest possible cooling should be possible. Finally, there is a metal backplate on the underside, as is now part of the series at ZOTAC.

What is the difference between the Mini, the normal, and the Extreme Edition of the Zotac 1070 TI?

In general, the three models differ in the arrangement and the number of fans. There are also differences in cooling performance and the thermal dissipation of waste heat. Why don’t we recommend the Amp-Extreme? Well, the price performance is not right here.

Our Assessment

The biggest advantage, which should also immediately catch the eye, is the compact design and compatibility with most cases and mainboards. But not only spatially but also optically, ZOTAC has made sure that it conforms to most builds. Because the black/white color scheme is not noticeable, even if you have planned crazy color combinations.

Probably the biggest disadvantage of such a small design is its limited cooling capacity. As a result, you will hardly be able to overclock this card, as it can already reach maximum temperatures in the factory settings and could quickly become a bit louder under full load. A possible overheating is impossible, thanks to ZOTAC’s Icestorm technology.

Pros

  • Compact design
  • Lower energy consumption
  • Cheaper than other 1070 TIs

Cons

  • Hardly overclockable
  • It can get a little hotter under full load

About the EVGA GTX 1070 TI SC Gaming Black Edition

Higher price for better support – that is the motto here. The next candidate in the battle for the throne is the EVGA GTX 1070 TI . Equipped with 2 fans, there is a risk of confusion because the 1070 TI looks almost exactly like some other EVGA models. So make sure you get the right one.

Our assessment

Let’s be honest, The cards from the SC Gaming series may not be among the most beautiful cards, but not everyone wants a rig with windows and RGB lighting in the case. For this, you get a high-quality model that doesn’t need to hide behind any 1070 TI.

Although it only has two coolers, it stays cool enough even at maximum power so that you would theoretically even have some room above if you wanted to overclock it. Just don’t overdo it because two coolers are still just two coolers.

Register the card directly with EVGA after purchase. Because even if you invest a little more money here, EVGA is known for offering the best support.

OUR TIP

Pros

  • stable cooling
  • high quality
  • Very good support from EVGA

Cons

  • Higher power consumption than other models
  • Not highly overclockable
  • Slightly higher price

About the ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1070 TI

Probably the best GTX 1070 TI currently on the market , connoisseurs will have already expected it. The ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1070 Ti stands for high performance, and the 1070 TI from this series does not fall out of line. It comes with everything you would expect, 3 coolers, RGB and size ratios, where you should be careful that you have enough space in the case.

The cooling performance does not rely exclusively on the 3 fans but is also based on the aluminium radiator, which is much wider than you are used to from cards to really get the most out of it.

Our assessment

If you have space in the case and go for performance, you will not be able to get past this card. Prices for graphics cards are currently only snapshots, but if this remains so low in comparison, then grab it! Unlike many other cards, this one comes to you overclocked by default and still offers some space above, thanks to the good cooling.

What is also very positive: Among all the cards from the 1070 TI series presented here, we find the ones with the lowest energy consumption. It also offers two HDMI connections, even if that means that it only has 2 display ports. Except for the huge design, we don’t see a disadvantage here. The cooling performance is so good that the fans remain comparatively quiet even under full load.

Pros

  • Excellent cooling performance
  • Nice look + RGB

Cons

  • Driver installation required for normal functionality
  • Huge

About the MSI GTX 1070 TI Gaming 8G

Last but not least, we have the red kites from MSI Gaming GeForce GTX 1070 Ti. we would probably award the title ” the quietest 1070 Ti ” here. The red color scheme may not fit into every build, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t get some fitting problem here.

As with the ASUS card, an aluminum radiator is used here. This cools the card so that it can even switch the fans off completely when they are not needed.

What is the difference between the MSI 1070 TI models?

All 1070 Ti’s from MSI are clocked the same, but the cooling solutions differ and offer different efficiency degrees. The operating temperatures achieved between the various models can vary considerably.

Our assessment

The red color may not suit everyone’s taste. What MSI is known for and what they once again prove here is the whisper-quiet cooling. So if you’re aiming for a quiet build, then this is definitely the place to go. In terms of performance, the card doesn’t have to hide, as it also offers plenty of scope for overclocking, thanks to its good cooling.

Pros

  • Whisper quiet
  • Acceptable overclocking options
  • Outperforms some GTX 1080 cards

Cons

  • The red design is not for everyone
  • Not very cheap
  • Slight heat problems under full load

About the Asus GTX 1070 ROG Strix OC

As with its big sister, 1070 Ti variant, the ASUS GTX 1070 OC has three fans and a radiator, which in terms of size is out of the ordinary when compared to other 1070 models.Top performance with low power consumption, the Asus GTX 1070 is right at the top.

You will find RGB lighting on the fans and the metal backplate, which you can adjust as you like, and thanks to the dark gray color, it fits wonderfully into any build.

What is the difference between the ROG OC and the Standard Edition?

The ROG models are clocked higher by default, which results in higher power consumption and better overclocking potential.

Our assessment

Even with the 1070 variant, we can hardly find any disadvantages. At a fair price, you get an impressive card. Excellent cooling thanks to the huge radiator and 3 fans. The card reached maximum values of just 61 ° C under full load.

This only has the small disadvantage that you need enough space in the case because the Strix models do not fit into every computer. One thing that ASUS does right with the Strix range is that it provides 2 HDMI ports. A display port has to give way to this, but if you want to make your build VR ready, this will benefit you.

And if the card doesn’t cool you enough, you can attach additional fans to the two additional 4-pin connectors. Hardly anything ASUS didn’t think of.

Pros

  • Excellent cooling performance
  • 2 HDMI ports
  • Further connections for fans

Cons

  • Huge!
  • AURA software with problems
  • Fiddly installation because of the size

About the ZOTAC GTX 1070 AMP! Extremes

The best GTX 1070 and at the same time the one with the best cooling. The ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1070 AMP from ZOTAC has truly earned its name. Here you will find an extreme that is second to none. The three fans cool the card to a minimum, and the RGB lighting and gray coloring give you the freedom to adapt it to any build.

The good cooling performance is reflected in the size of the card, but not in the price.

Our assessment

If you’re looking for the coolest 1070, you’ve found it here. The AMP comes under load! Extreme on average 58 ° C. That is an absolute record and even depends on the Strix from ASUS. In terms of price, the card is also within a very fair range, so if you are looking for the hook, you will find it in the old saying “cheap to buy, expensive to maintain”. Unlike ordinary cards of the 1070 series, the AMP consumes! Extreme with 250 watts, a whopping 100 watts more than all the others listed here. Power savers should therefore think twice before pressing the order button.

Finally, as with the ASUS Strix, you should also pay attention to the size. Because here, too, 2.5 slots (the normal AMP only occupies 2) are taken from you, and the good piece’s size also weighs a lot. Unfortunately, ZOTAC did not include a “support bracket” here. So you should order this under certain circumstances.

Pros

  • Best cooling performance on the market
  • Nice look
  • Very good gaming performance

Cons

  • Huge
  • high power consumption
  • No connections for additional external fans

About the EVGA GTX 1070 FTW Gaming ACX 3.0 – The Quietest GTX 1070

The EVGA GTX 1070 FTW Gaming ACX 3.0 comes in a slightly more appealing design than the SC Gaming series. Metal accents well present the plastic body. The two fan design does not take up too much space, is whisper-quiet, and can therefore also be used in smaller cases. Unfortunately, the cooling performance falls by the wayside.

Our assessment

If you plan to screw a compact PC together, you will be satisfied with FTW Gaming. The small design makes it one of the smallest 1070 cards, and you still get two coolers. Unfortunately, they don’t do too well at keeping the card cool.

It reached a full 75 C° under load. This is cooler than the reference card from Nvidia but much more than comparable cards from other retailers and board partners. Enthusiasts still have the opportunity to get a little more out of it because there is some room for overclocking without having to turn the volt switch.

Register the card directly with EVGA after purchase. Because even if you invest a little more money here, EVGA is known for offering the best support.

OUR TIP

Pros

  • Compact design
  • Larger fans than SC version
  • EVGA support is known as one of the best (3year guarantee)

Cons

MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G – Best GTX 1070 for Overclockers

Like every MSI card with its classic red color scheme, the MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G  is a graphics unit that divides opinions. If you’re planning a build that will fit a red card, this will be a happy one. If not, then you will probably have to resort to other, more open designs.

The two-fan design allows this card to be used in smaller cases as it does not take up too much space. You should only plan 2 slots in width.

Our assessment

We have seen many PC builds with a red MSI card installed, and they were all beautiful. We would have loved to have taken them with us. Most people at work have an eye for it and are a bit more used to throwing hardware together, according to optics. If you don’t know what you are doing, it can also quickly happen that MSI’s signal colors thwart your plans.

A further drawback of the card is the high price. You will definitely find graphics cards on the market that sometimes charge 100 $ less for the same performance. So here you really have to know that you want to have an MSI. Maybe you can shoot them a little cheaper in the sale.We can only advise you to do so. Plus, MSI’s GTX 1070 cards are best for happy overclocking. This is one of the best if you plan to get a good beat out of it. Stable 2GHz should be possible with a little more volts.

Pros

ZOTAC GTX 1070 Mini – Best GTX 1070 for Mini-ITX cases

The ZOTAC GTX 1070 Mini , and just like its 1070 Ti counterpart, you will find a card here that fits in almost every PC and still hits the speedometer properly. With a length of only 21cm, it is one of the most minor 1070 cards.

Our assessment

The nickname Mini is not just a gimmick. It’s a program. Even a backplate was omitted. Whether that’s an advantage is probably up for debate. A lot of ballast was thrown overboard here to be the smallest 1070 on the market. As with the 1070 Ti Mini, the so-called Freeze Tech is also used here. This means that if the card works with passive cooling in idle mode, the fans are switched off and brought to a standstill. This not only has the advantage that the card does not make any noise, but it also extends its lifespan, as no mechanical parts can wear out here.

With a bit of know-how, even enthusiasts get their money’s worth, because theoretically clocks of over 2GHz can be achieved if the card is given enough volts. And even then, the card continues to cool to almost 70 C ° load. With the form factor, that’s a decent performance for which you hardly have to put money on the table. So price performance is very important to the Mini!

Pros

  • Minimal design
  • Low price

Cons

  • Fan Blades break

The Best GTX 1070 Ti

As always, it isn’t easy to choose the ONE winner, as everyone has slightly different requirements. But since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we leave that to you and insist on the hard facts. The ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1070 Ti * clearly wins here. If you have enough space available, you will have pure joy with this piece of jewelry. It is inherently a bit stronger than the rest, but you will still be able to lure out a few Hz because all 1070 Ti’s are known to be throttled at NVidia’s behest. So don’t be afraid, and you can turn your 1070 Ti into a monster that can even take on the 1080s.

Best GTX 1070

We’re shooting into the blue here, but if you are an enthusiast and want maximum power, you will probably not use 1070 but move slightly higher on the performance scale. Therefore we choose a card as the best 1070 that brings the most “Bang for your Buck.” And that is the ZOTAC GTX AMP! Extreme *.

Although we have to say that, in retrospect, this would probably have won the general performance test, because three fans, the best cooling performance of all and still the cheapest (except for its sister, the “Mini”), that’s quite a number. So we definitely recommend the Zotac for the normal 1070s.

Only the very strict penny foxes should watch out here and possibly grab the mini. Because as much power it brings up, so much energy is wasted in the lower touring areas. 250 watts in idle mode is quite steep and could also affect your electricity bill in the long run.

PURCHASE ADVICE: HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT GTX 1070 (TI)

Since you now know which models are currently the best on the market, we would like to explain what you have to pay attention to before buying. We address all relevant points and show you the differences between the GTX 1070 and GTX 1070 Ti (after all, this is a GTX 1070 comparison!).

Pay attention to compatibility!

Of course, you should always first make sure that your mainboard has the necessary PCIe 3.0 slots for a GTX 1070, especially if you plan to run two of them in SLI mode. If this is not the case, you should probably upgrade your mainboard.

Take the size and dimensions of the graphics card into an account

Another significant point besides hardware compatibility, Does the new GTX 1070 even physically fit into your case? Since PCI 3.0 is now the standard, this question should occupy you even more than the first one.

Because as you have already read above, some high-end graphics cards are usually quite large. Therefore, always check whether the model you want really fits into your case.

The GTX 1070 Ti is as long as a GTX 1080, so it is better to measure in the housing so that it fits in! We haven’t only heard from people who indulge in an expensive GTX 1070 only to find that it doesn’t fit. Measure tape in hand and play it safe.

GTX 1070 and 1070 Ti comparison: What are the similarities and differences?

To get straight to the point: The GTX 1070 Ti has more in common with the GTX 1080

To get straight to the point: The GTX 1070 Ti has more in common with the GTX 1080 than with the GTX 1070. Even optically, a 1070 Ti looks very similar to a 1080 FE. Like right now?

Sounds crazy, it is too.

As you can see here, the 1070 and the Ti version are technically not that different. Sure, the Ti series has a slightly higher base clock and more CUDA cores, but the turbo clock is the same, funnily enough.

Rumor has it that Nvidia prescribes a throttling of the GTX 1070 Ti so that more GTX 1080s can be sold.

A rogue who thinks bad here. So is the GTX 1070 Ti complete nonsense? Not exactly.

GTX 1070 vs. 1070 Ti Gaming Performance

After all the technical details, here’s something tangible. Is a GTX 1070 Ti even worth it? Check out the following video and see how the two card types perform in current games:

What you can clearly see: Of course, the GTX 1070 Ti is always a few FPS (between 5-20) ahead but often runs hotter than the normal 1070. And we’re talking about FPS beyond 80, which your in-game doesn’t notice anyway ( who needs 130 FPS with Dirt 4?). We are also talking about a 90 vs. 100 FPS difference, which you won’t notice.

To top it off, we have another big gaming benchmark from our colleagues at PCGamer.com (top overview!):

Average FPS benchmark for 15 tested games (Graphics: PCGamer.com )

You can also see here: Of course, the GTX 1070 Ti has the edge, but 1070 is always very close. We leave the final judgment to you.

Pay attention to the cooling

There are currently two types of graphics card air cooling:

Open design: Characterized by an exposed heat sink and usually two or three large fans

Blower fan: Completely enclosed design. The graphics card relies on a single small fan to blow air out of the back of the card

The two types of cooling at a glance

Both are efficient, although the first variant is much more popular for obvious reasons. Graphics cards with an open cooling design are often quieter and cooler, and they also have a much greater overclocking potential.

Fan fans are louder and the card tends to get hotter. Still, these cards just look better and are ideal for computer cases that don’t have good airflow, so both options are highly recommended depending on your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which GTX 1070 manufacturer is the best?

As you can see from our wide selection of top models, ultimately, no manufacturer can be described as “the best.” It is important to understand that both the 1070 and 1070Ti series have the same Nvidia GPU installed. Accordingly, the graphics cards have almost the same performance regardless of the manufacturer.
The only factors that different manufacturers differ are:
The type and efficiency of cooling
Overclocking potential, which is influenced by cooling performance Customer support
Standard software that can be easily changed
Fan bearings used (here you want graphics cards with “Ball Bearings” bearings)
Nevertheless, manufacturers such as Zotac, EVGA, MSI, and Asus are currently among the best in graphics cards, as they combine the best of the factors mentioned above.
04 special tip
1. For a particularly long service life, choose a graphics card with ball-bearing fans.
2. Manufacturers such as Zotac, Asus, MSI, and EVGA use this technology in their graphics card fans.
3. It is best to check shortly before you buy which storage technology is used with the respective model.
4. You can usually find this information directly on the manufacturer’s website. The MSI GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G *, for example, uses double ball bearings and guarantees you very stable fans.

Is it worth upgrading from 1070 to 1070 Ti?

If you look at the current price range, definitely no (and we can tell you that without a technical GTX 1070 review!). Means: If you already have a GTX 1070, you definitely do NOT need a 1070 Ti. Either you get a GTX 1080 Ti, or you are waiting for the 2000 series.

Which GTX 1070 to buy

In our comparison we have selected the best 3 for you which are the following
1. ASUS GTX 1070 OC
2. MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G
3. ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1070 AMP

When is a 1070 Ti worthwhile?

We would say an upgrade to the 1070 Ti is only worthwhile if you own a GTX 980 or older. Because even with a GTX 980, it will be difficult because it still has quite good power. Of course, it always depends on which games you want to play and how nice the whole thing should ultimately look in which resolution.

Is the GTX 1070 Ti internal competition for Nvidia itself?

When NVidia launched the improved GTX 1070 with the nickname “Ti” in 2017, they were primarily targeting AMD’s rivals. The RX Vega 56 actually filled the area between 1070 and 1080 – not only in terms of price but also in performance. NVidia couldn’t let this competition sit on them, and since competition is known to stimulate business, we gamers remained the beneficiaries.
Despite its comparable performance, the Ti variant is not only cheaper than AMD’s counterpart but also comes dangerously close to the company’s own GTX 1080. So
counterpart but also comes dangerously close to the company’s own GTX 1080. So close that NVidia has even instructed board partners like MSI, ZOTAC, etc., to only put their 1070Ti cards on the market without overclocking. Of course, they followed the call, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t find neatly hidden power in the custom cards from Asus & Co.
Anyone who has paid attention will know that much better cooling systems are used here than NVidia has built into the reference cards. Ultimately, this means that you can overclock your new 1070 Ti properly depending on the cooling power. This is now very easy with programs like Afterburner from MSI, Precision from EVGA, or GPU Tweak II from ASUS and should not involve any risks. Of course, be careful here and find out where your approximate maximum values are. This is because these differ from card to card and often from chip to chip.
So if you are thinking of buying 1080, look at the prices for current 1070 Ti cards. It is no secret that these were especially popular with cryptocurrency miners. If any section of the population (besides us gamers) knows anything about graphics cards, they are the gold diggers of modern times. If you’re lucky, you can save a few dollars with a few simple steps without having to sacrifice performance.

GTX 1070 cards and Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is still not dead, quite the contrary. HTC and Valve have already launched a new, improved headset with the Vive Pro. But the Oculus Rift, which is slowly becoming affordable, is still on the rise.

Games are still being developed for virtual reality, so VR should not be left out when buying a new graphics card. After all, it could be that you will have to decide whether to treat yourself to such a headset soon.

The GTX 1060 is currently mentioned as the minimum for VR. However, you will not be able to play all games on a VR headset and with the highest settings for a long time. For two pictures in a higher resolution (min. 2160 x 1200) and a constant 90 Hz refresh rate (which are really important), GTX 1060 is not enough. You will have to reach at least GTX 1070 here.
